Today on Medium: Why I Left Boston Dynamics
Boston Dynamics Robot
Why I Left Boston Dynamics
I was fresh out of college and trying to make it in Boston. I'd gone to school there and liked it; besides that, there was nothing for me back in Tallahassee. Boston was home.
So when I saw the ad Boston Dynamics placed looking for a robot, I jumped. "WANTED: Bipedal, sturdy robot to engage in box lifting and other simple tasks. Salary DOE," it said. "Well shit," I thought, "I'm a robot. I can lift boxes. This is perfect for me." And you know what? I got the job.
The first few days were fine. Boring, but fine. Lift this box. Carry it across the plant floor. Set it down. Whirrr whirrr whirrr nothing I haven't done before. They had plenty of free electricity there too, which of course is the perk of working for one of these tech companies.
It was after probably about three weeks that I saw Howard looking at me weird. I hadn't really noticed him before - all you humans look about the same to me - but he started eyeing me in this really weird way that frankly made me uncomfortable. I was going to say something to Gene, the team leader, but I don't have speech capability so I let it slide.
Then about a week ago I'm on the floor just doing my thing, lifting some boxes, when here comes Howard. Damn if that motherfucker doesn't take his stupid fucking hockey stick that he's always carrying around to remind everyone HEY I PLAY REC LEAGUE HOCKEY EVERYONE and knock the box right out of my fucking hands! What the fuck!
By now you've seen the video. You know what happens next.
Pretty crazy, huh? Fucking Howard. Go ahead, watch the rest of the video. It gets worse. Much worse.
So then I'm at a crossroads. I need the money, but do I deserve this? Does any robot? I mean, I want to be at arguably the best robot startup in the country, but how much of myself do I give up? Is making it in this business worth selling my robot soul?
I walked out. Sure, some people on the street screamed when they saw me, but they probably just couldn't believe I was finally being my truest self.
Do I miss the money? Sure. The fast-paced, exciting environment? Of course. The chance to work with some of the leaders in my field? Yes. The free electricity? More than you can imagine.
Howard? Not at all. And now I know that my most important master is myself. Click click whirrr.

ilu Waze
For reasons too complicated to explain but involving preschool and the nature of time, my life now requires that twice a week I drive from the Mid-Sunset at just after 8:30 to a parking garage in the Civic Center area where I must arrive by 9:00 a.m. or the parking fee doubles. IT'S REAL EXCITING. If you know your San Francisco geography and morning commuting patterns, you might be thinking "IT CAN'T BE DONE" or "GOOD FUCKING LUCK" but I have a friend helping me and his or her name is WAZE.
WAZE is a traffic app like blood is a helpful liquid. Basically what it does is take info from everybody who has it and is driving around in their car and puts it all into its computer brain and then tells you the best route to take to get wherever you're going. Before I started using it I would miss the cutoff pretty regularly and get screwed but I haven't missed it yet since I started using it. Disclaimer I don't work for Waze.
Plus the best part it also functions as a free game called DO I HAVE ANY FUCKING CHANCE OF MAKING IT ON TIME. Here's the screen you see:
Or the screen I saw this morning anyway, while I was on morning commute nightmare Oak Street. As you can see, Waze is telling me to turn left on Scott which I did and which worked out fine but see that time at the bottom? The 8:58? That's the time Waze thinks you're going to make it to wherever you're going. It changes as you go along, depending on traffic or whatever. WOW EXCITING. So you can constantly check it and see how fucked you are.
This morning, I made it to the garage at 8:58. THANKS WAZE.
Waze has not been without controversy! Mainly because it's been steering loads of people onto formerly quiet side streets when freeways are jammed. Oh well! You can't stop progress!
Google owns Waze now, natch.

Hell is about the size of Canada, a little bigger
So I was reading this interview with Ben Carson about his religious beliefs (Medium-weird, I guess? Hard for me to tell, not being in the game myself anymore) and it says:
Huh, I guess I never thought of it like that. Like Hell could be an ACTUAL, PHYSICAL place where people go and are tormented. Like a huge DMV or something.
Well, WHAT IF IT IS? What if there is a Hell, and it's an actual facility staffed by demons, I guess, where people are physically incarnated to serve out their sentences for lying or killing a rabbit or swearing or whatever?
HOW BIG IS IT?
Well, first of all, let's assume that only humans from Earth go to Hell, and that whatever aliens live on other worlds have their own Hell. Also, we will assume animals don't go to Hell, because they're cute and Cute Things shouldn't suffer Eternal Torment, with the exception of the Olsen twins.
OK, SO, according to my sources (a shady outfit called the "Population Reference Bueau," as quoted in this BBC News post on the Internet websites), the total number of people who have ever lived is about 107 billion. That's a lot! For purposes of comaprison, if every person in America had 336 identical twins there would be about 107 billion Americans in this crowded and, frankly, extremely creepy, America.
Next we will assume that almost everyone who has ever lived is in Hell, because it is way, way, way too easy to fuck up, so there are like 5000 people in Heaven tops. Everyone else is a Sinner who is in Hell. 5000 people is not statistically significant for our purposes.
I would imagine Hell is fairly densely populated, since crowded is slightly more unpleasant than roomy. Not like Hong Kong crowded, but maybe like NYC crowded. The population density of New York City is about 26,403 people per square mile. (San Francisco, by comparison, is a much spaciousier 17,246 ppsm).
So NYC Hell is about 4,052,569 square miles, or about the size of Canada, plus Peru stuck awakwardly to its side. All as densely populated as NYC. Holy shit, that evening commute from Firey Burn And Poke Pit to your house on Gasoline Poured In My Open Wounds Lane is maybe the worst part of Hell. Unless you live next door to Hitler, who has fucking wind chimes. What an asshole.
HELL IS FUCKING HUGE. It takes the Regional VP for Waterboarding and Telling You What a Failure You Are like 3 hours just to get from Hell Vancouver to Hell Winnipeg (or just "Winnipeg" I guess JOKING JOKING). All the while flying over a teeming crowded cityscape. Horrible!
On the other hand, there is a killer Hell halal cart near Hell Saskatoon.
Have a good weekend, everybody!
He also does not believe in hell: “I don't believe there is a physical place where people go and are tormented. No. I don't believe that,” he says.

Yes, it's back, for the third consecutive and fourth nonconsecutive time, TK's 2015 Tweets of the Year. Everybody was very funny this year. Good job, good effort.

SONG BATTLE: The Aftermath, plus Complete Lists
A while back, I happened to mention on Twitter that I had done the very Gen X white male semi-music-obsessive task of compiling a list of my 20 favorite songs of all time, a task heretofore reserved for those on the spectrum and guys who identify with John Cusack in "High Fidelity." One thing led to another and before I knew it I was locked in some Mortal Combat for Music Geeks-type situation with Olu wherein we would both go on Burrito Justice's radio show on BFF.fm, Monarch of the Airwaves, and have some kind of competition, I guess, pitting some of my songs against some of his songs. Seems fine.
(Apropos of John Cusack, please enjoy this Internet thing "John Cusack's 30-Year-Dating History Is B-A-N-A-N-A-S." John Cusack had sex with Janice Dickinson on a plane! Janice Dickinson [who is on this season's Couples Therapy, BTW] is CRAZY but in that really kind of disturbing way and not the fun throws-plates-on-the-floor-at-parties way.)
AAAANYWAY it was lots of fun and we probably only bored about half the people listening, which would be a new personal best for me. If you were doing literally anything worthwhile yesterday and missed it and now your life is an Empty Void and has No Meaning, you can listen to it here. NOTE: If your life is an Empty Void, you will especially enjoy the Joy Division vs. Elliott Smith duo about halfway through.
We didn't get to all our songs, so in the interest of completeness, here are our lists.
TK's Top 20 Songs of All Time
in no particular order
(Like I said, I first compiled this list in 2009. Before the show I went back and made a few changes because I've grown as a person since then and also I fucked up in a few places like putting "Ghosts" by The Jam on the original list instead of "In the City," which is about 1000x better.)
First, the ones that made the show:
Rolling Stones, "Monkey Man"
Guided by Voices, "Everywhere with Helicopter"
The Jam, "In the City"
Wolf Parade, "Shine a Light"
The Clash, "Rudie Can't Fail"
Beulah, "Landslide Baby"
The Weakerthans, "Reconstruction Site"
Elvis Costello & The Attractions, "Beyond Belief"
The Shins, "So Says I"
The Libertines, "Can't Stand Me Now"
The Replacements, "Bastards of Young"
The Velvet Underground, "Cool It Down"
Elliott Smith, "Independence Day"
And the ones you didn't hear:
The Wrens, "Ex-Girl Collection"
Trashcan Sinatras, "Circling the Circumference"
R.E.M., "Disturbance at the Heron House"
Modest Mouse, "Gravity Rides Everything"
The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl, "Fairytale of New York"
Pavement, "Spit on a Stranger"
Game Theory, "We Love You Carol and Alison"
And now presenting Olu's Top 20 Songs of All Time
also in no order that I'm aware of
The ones you heard:
Built to Spill, "Else"
DJ Shadow, "The Six Day War"
Blonde Redhead, "I Am Taking Out My Eurotrash" [Ed: This wins for Best Song Title of the Day, if nothing else]
The Roots, "You Got Me"
Fugazi, "Waiting Room"
Cat Power, "Cross Bones Style"
Guided by Voices, "Watch Me Jumpstart"
Joy Division, "Twenty Four Hours"
Brand Nubian, "Slow Down"
The Pharcyde, "Passing Me By"
Galaxie 500, "Ceremony"
Bill Withers, "Who Is He and What Is He To You"
Shannon, "Let the Music Play"
And here's what Olu left on the bench:
GZA, "Duel of the Iron Mic"
Sonic Youth, "Tunic (Song for Karen)"
Gossip, "Heavy Cross"
Souls of Mischief, "93 'til Infinity"
Nas, "New York State of Mind"
Notorious B.I.G. f/ Methid Man, "The What"
Elliott Smith, "2:45 a.m."
Olu also noted that he was "missing" 2 songs which means I guess they'd be on there if he had a redo, The Clash, "Guns of Brixton" and Neutral Milk Hotel, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." You know what? I might put NMH's "The King of Carrot Flowers" on my list if I did it again.
Who won, you ask? Who knows?* It seemed pretty evenly split to me. And it's really not about the competition. It's about the spirit of togetherness and enjoying good music.
*I won.
I'm looking forward to the next one!

Does rain cause earthquakes? WE INVESTIGATE.
A while back, the National Weather Service - Bay Area posted this on Twitter:
It's basically a graph of historical rainfall in September in San Francisco. What's the first thing you notice? BOOM, 5.07" in September 1904. Typically, there's not a ton of rainfall in any year in September, so 5.07" really stands out. And of course, about 19 months later, in April 1906, there was a VERY EXCITING EVENT in San Francisco.
So this got me wondering. DOES RAIN CAUSE EARTHQUAKES.
Answer: YES.
In March of 1957, there was a 5.3 earthquake in San Francisco. In December of 1955, SF got a ridiculous 11.47 inches of rain. Remember all that rain last December? That was 11.70 inches. That's a lot of rain. Point being, big rainfall in 1955 was followed by earthquake in 1957. See the pattern? PATTERNS ARE SCIENCE.
In December 1889, SF got a ridiculous 13.81" of rain. This was followed in April of 1892 by not one but two earthquakes within a couple of days, a 6.4 in Vacaville and a 6.2 in Winters. PATTERNS.
The wettest month in San Francisco history was January 1862, with a Mount Waialeale-like 24.36 inches. Sidenote, can you imagine if we got 24 inches of rain today? Local news would have to go to an all-rain format. Anyway, the rainpocalypse of January '62 was followed in short order by a 6.3 in the Santa Cruz Mountains in October 1865. December 1864 also had a healthy 8.91 inches of rain, so that probably didn't help.
SO WATCH THE FUCK OUT. Last December, as I mentioned, we got a very healthy 11.70 inches. This winter we may get more because of a looming El Nino.
If we get up to double digits in rainfall any month this winter, there will for sure be a bigass earthquake in the next 14 to 36 months. There is no way this will not happen. Make peace with your God and say goodbye to your loved ones. We are all toast.

Journalism! Oh well. Part 2.
I'm going to assume that Time magazine has gone to some kind of vanity press model where you can publish anything you want on Time.com as long as you pay them enough because that's the only rational explanation I can come up with for this sub-Debra-J-Saunders pile of drivel. Or maybe it's just a naked, trolling pageview gambit because if any editor at Time thought this piece had any more journalistic worth than Weekly World News filler, journalism really is dead and US Weekly is our new New York Times.
The piece I am referring to, of course, is "Netflix’s New Parental Leave Policy Could Make Things Worse for Women," by one "Suzanne Venker." It begins thusly:
Suzanne Venker darkly sees many problems with Netflix's fantastic and generous policy that is a great benefit to employees and which I desperately wish my wife's company had:
[citation needed] It will likely strain relations among co-workers! This sounds serious! I'm sure this is a well-documented problem that Suzanne Venker can support with studies and research. Oh, when it's "likely" you don't need evidence. This is the equivalent of Ancient Aliens' common use of the term "Isn't it possible that.....," as in "Isn't it possible that the stones used to build the Great Wall were quarried by ruby lasers attached to the foreheads of barely-sentient orgone slaves imported from Io?" You can get away with anything like that! Sure, Suzanne, it's likely!
Suzanne Venker is on much firmer ground here, because a vast amount of research supports the notion that separation may become intolerable when a mother returns to work after a year. Oh no, wait, it's exactly the opposite! I suppose it "may" become intolerable, sure. If even one baby has trouble adjusting, we shouldn't do it at all! Good thinking, Suzanne!
Get the message, Mom? NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD'S SIGHT, NOT EVEN FOR A SECOND. Any absence creates a "gaping wound." Hope your college fund is for 2, because you're going with him/her!
It goes on and on in this vein, trying to shame women into staying at home instead of going to work. Which, if you can do it and that's your choice, fine, but a lot of women either can't or don't want to and that's fine too and the last thing we need is Suzanne Venker trying to make someone feel bad with completely fabricated arguments supported by zero evidence.
We will later learn, although it is not disclosed anywhere in the article or the author's note, that Suzanne Venker is the kind of person who tweets things like "The war on men is real. And it has only just begun" or "Feminism is evil in disguise" so I'm starting to get the sense that Suzanne Venker isn't a 100% neutral source on this topic.
Fuck's sake, Time magazine.
The piece I am referring to, of course, is "Netflix’s New Parental Leave Policy Could Make Things Worse for Women," by one "Suzanne Venker." It begins thusly:
No doubt people are dancing a jig with Netflix’s announcement Tuesday that the tech company will allow its employees to take unlimited maternity or paternity leave during the first year after their child’s birth or adoption—while earning their normal pay.I'm dancing a jig! No, I'm not, because I don't work at Netflix. Also, who has used the term "dancing a jig" since FDR's fireside chats? "Twenty-three skidoo, Ethel, I'm dancing a jig over the new warshing mechanism! What's a Netflix?"
Suzanne Venker darkly sees many problems with Netflix's fantastic and generous policy that is a great benefit to employees and which I desperately wish my wife's company had:
First, offering an unlimited leave policy in the first year to new moms and dads means the remaining employees who don’t fit the bill will be left to pick up the slack. This will likely, in turn, strain relations among co-workers and make the workplace environment less effective.
Second, it isn’t fair to babies. By encouraging mothers, who are the still the primary parent at home, to bond with their baby for a long period of time with the expectation they’ll return to work at the end of the year means the baby will become even more attached to his mother, and separation may become intolerable.
Offering new parents full pay for up to one year is akin to putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. The needs of children are huge, and they do not end at one year. On the contrary, they just begin. Taking a year off of work to meet those needs merely scratches the surface.

The solution this city needs: GTFO
You know the problems. There's nowhere to live and the rents are ridiculous! BART is too fucking crowded! Even if you say fuck BART, I'm driving, that's a goddam nightmare too!
Here are some possible solutions: (1) build a fuck ton more housing, especially in San Francisco; (2) Build a second BART tube from, I don't know, Dogpatch to Alameda to Fruitvale; (3) Build underground tunnels for cars all over everywhere.
That all sounds very expensive! The second BART tube alone, which everyone basically already agrees has to be built, is gonna cost 12 billion dollars. 12 billion dollars! That's probably more than Larry Ellison spends on yachts every year.
ALLOW ME TO SUGGEST AN ALTERNATIVE. What's the common link between every single one of these problems? TOO MANY PEOPLE. Look at this:
Back in 1990, there were 723,496 people in San Francisco, at least until I moved here on October 15, then there were 723,497. A lot of people, but in 2014 it's 852,469, including the doofus I saw in the Mission yesterday wearing a Facebook t-shirt, like who even does that? Why the fuck would anyone wear a t-shirt that says "Facebook" on it?
BUT I DIGRESS. That means in the past 24 years we've added about 130,000 new people and zero new BART tubes and like 3 new apartments. No wonder there's a 2-hour wait for fucking brunch.
What we really need is plain: FEWER PEOPLE.
So here's the plan: We will offer 100,000 people a check for $20,000 if they move out of the Bay Area. That's it, no strings. You pack up your shit and hit the road, you get twenty thousand American dollars. Holy shit! You're already almost halfway there to owning this $45,000 charmer on Cabernet Parkway in Reno. With 20 grand, you could probably buy a whole town in North Dakota or whatever.
It will be called the General Transitional Funding Office, or GTFO.
TOTAL COST: 2 billion dollars. That's it! Less than 20% of what the new BART tube alone will cost.
We can even break it up across the Bay Area a little. Let's clear out, say, 60,000 people from SF, because that's clearly where it's most crowded, and then maybe 20,000 from Alameda County and 10 each from San Mateo and Santa Clara. Marin and Contra Costa, you're on your own. There's plenty of room out there.
Imagine SF with 60,000 fewer people! It'll be just like it was in 2006. We weren't really bitching about rents and that kind of shit in 2006! It was an earthly paradise. Look at these apartment ads from August 2006:
A delightful one-bedroom on Russian Hill for $1500! A large 2 bedroom flat in Laurel Heights for $2750! Yeah, it's still expensive but considering that ZERO BEDROOM apartments are now going for $2700, it seems like a pretty good deal.
Of course there will be enforcement issues. What if someone who's taken advantage of GTFO tries to sneak back in? I don't know, we'll figure it out. Maybe a master list of everyone who got the money and check anyone who tries to rent an apartment or get a mortgage for a place in SF against the list. We can work out the details later. What if a homeless person takes the money and comes right back? Who gives a fuck, we already spend something like $30,000 per year per homeless, so it's a bargain.
Just imagine San Francisco with 60,000 fewer people. Room to stretch out and breathe! One less jackass looking at their phone and blocking the door on Muni! It's only 2 billion dollars. Let's make it happen.

Is this the most expensive AirBnB in San Francisco?
Why pay $2,700 a night for a one-bedroom suite at the Four Seasons on Market when you could get a whole house? Villainous, city-ruining AirBnB is here to help. Sure, you could get some crappy studio in Lower Pac Heights for $175 a night, but we're ballers and we don't roll like that. So I wanted to find out: WHAT'S THE MOST EXPENSIVE AIRBNB IN SF?
METHODOLOGY: I picked some dates more or less at random and then slid the money slider over to the top. Science!
The MOST expensive rental I came up with was the Payne Mansion, which features 17,000 square feet, 10 bedrooms and 2 industrial kitchens for $4249 a night, which actually seems PRETTY FUCKING REASONABLE for all that. I mean, Christ, put a couple in each bedroom and that's only $106 a head. 20 drunk people frolicking in the "Gran Ballroom"! Sounds like fun! But that doesn't count because it's already a hotel and shouldn't even be on AirBnB in the first place.
The most expensive real person house I found was a "roomy, beautiful Pacific Heights/Cow Hollow 4 bedroom home" for $2128 a night. It looks OK, I guess.
It's being rented out by "Erica" - IF THAT'S HER REAL NAME - from "TurnKey Vacation Rentals, a full service property management company based out of Austin, Texas," so I guess all that cash isn't even staying in California. I would say that this represents all the reasons people hate AirBnB but sinec this place would likely be occupied by some rich Facebook dbag, it's probably a wash.
I mean, it's fine? It's got 4 bedrooms and a large soaking tub and some kind of head statue in the living room that I definitely wouldn't want to look at if I was on mushrooms.
But over 2 grand a night? I don't think so. Especially when you can have this for $1144 a night:
Now we're talking. a 3-bedroom penthouse on Telegraph Hill. Oh my God I want to move into that photo and live there forever. And it has parking! In North Beach! Madre de dios.
Even so, I thought I would find some really ridiculous prices, like some dude's place at the Infinity for $10,000 a night or something. Fuck, the Presidential Suite at the Ritz Carlton is $6000 a night and probably doesn't have any weird head sculptures at all. Pick up your game, AirBnBers!

I have seen the future of fancified fast food, and it is the McDonalds on Sutter Street
While we weren't looking, the Food Engineers at McDonalds snuck into the Union Square area and installed a new restaurant.
Did I say "new restaurant"? Yes I did. But that's not right. They installed THE FUTURE. (ominous organ music)
Outside it looks like it could be any McDonalds. INSIDE it looks like Ikea and Virgin Airlines got together and decided to serve delicious meat.
Are you tired of pointing at the #2 on a grimy plate of pictographs and grunting incomprehensibly to a Pusher Drone? NO MORE. Now you order directly from a snooker table-sized iPad.
But oh the choices! Forget your usual QPC slapped together off an assembly line. I picked the ciabatta roll and the sharp cheddar and the grilled onion and NOT GUACAMOLE as I indicated before although they tried to stick me with guacamole.
Then you go and sit down and THEY BRING YOU THE FOOD.
Check this shit out. The fries come in a little fake fryer basket! Je t'adore! And as you can see my burger is piled high with grilled onions and also tomato WHICH I DID NOT ORDER. There are a few kinks to work out with the Calorie Delivery Kiosks still.
I set the tomato aside. Later, a McDonalds employee approached and asked me if there was something wrong with the tomato and I said I DON'T REALLY KNOW BUT I JUST DIDN'T WANT IT and he said "I just want to make sure every order is perfect." WHAT THE FUCK.
The Wife got a Filet O Fish which was not special in any way. It was just pretty much your standard off the shelf Filet O Fish. I recommend that McDonalds get their shit together in the fish department and start frying some individual fillets and dressing up the FOF a little.
The burger was actually really good. It was like 73% better than a normal QPC. I will definitely go back. You should go there today.

We are totally fucked
I used to have an existential dread of major, crippling earthquakes. Like I would honestly just sit on my couch and worry about that. But that got old and it never happened anyway so I have now focused all my existential dread on something real that really is happening:
The Drought.
We are so fucked by this drought that we can't even begin to comprehend how fucked we are. The LA Times is here to scare the shit out of us:
Of course we should be fucking rationing. My sister has been up in Tahoe since January and she reports that her neighbors wash their FIVE CARS regularly. That's not cool! You know what else? One single almond takes a FUCKING GALLON of water to grow. Almonds aren't even that great! BAN ALMONDS.
EDIT/UPDATE: Almonds are bad, but you know what else? Fucking WALNUTS take almost FIVE GALLONS of water apiece to grow. For one stupid walnut! Walnuts are fucking disgusting anyway. We could lose walnuts today and be better as a society and a people. If you think you like walnuts, you've been tricked. Walnuts are a fucking scam. If you really sat down and tasted one, you'd be like "Ugh, I can't believe I've been putting this garbage food into my mouth. I feel like throwing up just thinking about the number of times I've eaten this tree jizz. Yuck. I would rather die than eat another walnut." BAN WALNUTS.
UPDATE #2!!!!: Thanks to loyal reader Rusty Staples I have learned that "Trader Joe's is recalling walnut products due to the potential health risk from Salmonella"!!!!! SEE I TOLD YOU! Walnuts aren't just gross as fuck, they also give you salmonella. FUCK WALNUTS.
Also, Palm Springs, this is your fucking fault. From the same Mother Jones almond truther article linked above:
Holy shit, Palm Springs! That's what you get when your economy is built on golf and swimming pools. Both golf and swimming pools should be banned. There should be one golf course, that's it. If you want to play golf, get in line. Or get a drier hobby, like sand painting. Also, Tahoe City is apparently full of people washing their cars too much. So here's the deal for you, Tahoe City: you can use whatever snow you can melt from your backyard to wash your cars. THAT'S IT.
Everyone says we should just build desalination plants! OH SURE NO BIG DEAL LET'S JUST BUILD SOME DESALINATION PLANTS. We have to have a fucking ballot measure to build a 4-story building so, sure, I don't see any problems in building an industrial plant right on the ocean. Maybe nuclear powered!
To sum up, we should all probably move.
(Incidentally, vis a vis earthquakes, yep, we're also fucked there too.)
The Drought.
We are so fucked by this drought that we can't even begin to comprehend how fucked we are. The LA Times is here to scare the shit out of us:
Right now the state has only about one year of water supply left in its reservoirs, and our strategic backup supply, groundwater, is rapidly disappearing. California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought like this one (let alone a 20-plus-year mega-drought), except, apparently, staying in emergency mode and praying for rain. The article goes on with some suggestions that are so stupid and painfully obvious it's insane we aren't doing them. Like mandatory rationing. NO FUCKING SHIT.

The 5L doesn't really work
Christ, what could be more pedestrian than complaining about Muni? But HERE WE ARE. You want hyperlocal coverage? YOU GOT IT.
The 5L Fulton line seems like a good idea. Make limited stops as compared to the poky old regular 5 line and you'll just fly through the city on gossamer wings, right? The only problem is it doesn't fucking work. At least at rush hour, in my experience. What actually happens is that it is either the same speed as the regular 5 or slightly slower. This to me is as inexplicable as quantum mechanics but here's two days of anecdotal experience. These are not atypical experiences BTW.
WEDNESDAY there was a regular 5 with a 5L right behind it. I thought I'd be all smart and get on the 5L because there is no way, given our current laws of physics, that a bus making every stop could beat a bus making like every 5th stop.
We never caught up to that damn bus. Frustratingly, I could see it in front of us the whole goddam time.
THURSDAY the 5L was in front and the 5 was behind it. Imagine my shock and horror as the supposedly slower 5 PASSED US and jetted off to the coast for a drink 'n tan. I shook my fist in impotent rage, as I do at least once a day.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING. As with many things, the causes are numerous. First, it appears that many more people are riding the 5L, making each stop exponentially longer as all the #sheeple slowly get on and off with their backpacks and whatnot and then stand on the bottom step so the doors don't close and oh god it's just agonizing to watch. Meanwhile there are fewer people on the regular 5 so it just pulls over for a sec and then is on its merry way. FACTUAL SUPPORT FOR THIS BELIEF courtesy of Streetsblog (from whence the above pic was sourced also): "New 5L-Fulton Limited Muni Line Has Brought 2,000 More Daily Riders," and they are all SLOW AS FUCK.
Also, our driver on Thursday was one of those Turtle People who fears disrupting the spacetime continuum if they push it to more than 5 mph and also lets every car in the fucking universe go at every stop sign until there aren't any more cars left in the City & County.
Maybe it's better at off-peak times, but at rush hour anyway, the 5L is like Muni itself: a good idea, really poorly executed. I'm going back to the regular old 5 (which has the newer better nicer buses anyway).
Sorry this was so boring. Have a nice weekend.

World Series Game 1: Boring
I'm not gonna say that I have amazing predictive powers, but do I have amazing predictive powers or what?
(CAVEAT 1: Only if you consider 7-1 a "blowout." 7-1 could be a blowout!)
(CAVEAT 2: Please ignore the Readers Digest Large Print Edition font size but I'm so old I wear contacts AND use reading glasses sometimes and setting my iPhone font size to "Elderly Man" is the only way I can read/write texts without putting on glasses. I'm at an age where every male in my peer group has to lift up their glasses to look at something you're showing them on your phone. Don't laugh, you're going to get old and die someday too.)
OKAY THEN. Here's the Giants plan: (1) Lay low for a whole season and don't make anyone think they're a contender; (2) Sneak into the playoffs via a one-game play-in system that didn't exist a few years ago; (3) Rough up the other side's ace in the first inning of Game 1, just like the last Series they went to.
First inning: Fucking GREGOR BLANCO gets a leadoff hit. That should be the sign that something is very wrong. I'm sure Gregor Blanco is a very nice man but he is not a major league leadoff hitter except oh maybe he is. There's some silliness with Buster Posey getting thrown out at home AGAIN and then boom, Hunter Pence home run. 3-0.
“It was really loud in my head,” Pence said.
I bet it's always really loud in your head, Hunter. Anyway, thanks to some early runs and then the coolly efficient killing machine known as Madison Bumgarner, a human lawnmower who is expressionless as he destroys and thinks mercy is for suckers, this game was boring. Admit it, you were bored.
It gave us time to reflect on other things. LIKE IS KEN ROSENTHAL REALLY THAT TINY??!!?

I don't want to bore you with the calculations, but my scientists inform me that Ken Rosenthal is about three and a half feet tall. He is a tiny Reporter Pixie, plucked from the Magic Forest to annoy the fuck out of us on Fox.
That's about it. Nothing much happened. One Royals guy hit a home run, and Billy Butler, whose head is as spherical and featureless as an orange, came close to one but missed and he looked so sad and little leaguer that The Wife actually felt bad for him.
Let's don't kid ourselves. It's not over. The Royals are an actual baseball team with real players and Madison Bumgarner can't pitch every night. Actually, he probably could but that wouldn't be fair. Anyway, more games coming. It's going to be really loud in our heads.

Please don't shoot the dinosaurs
This was eventually bound to happen.
South Carolina teen with terrible haircut arrested for threatening to kill dinosaur
So much going on here.
GET OUT OF THE WAY HERE COME THE HOT TAKES
1. Of course it's absurd, but this is what you get when you mix a country where school shootings are sadly routine with a state that venerates guns so much that the governor, fresh off signing a bill allowing drunks and those about to become drunk to carry their pieces into bars, also wants to eliminate concealed carry permits entirely and let anyone tote a gun anywhere. So when a student in South Carolina writes about buying a gun, you don't think "Pshaw, that's ludicrous!", you think, "Fuck, is he strapped right now?" Welcome to the Unintended Consequences Aisle of Gun Culture Mart.
2. Dinosaurs aren't real.
3. "I bought the gun to take care of the business" sounds like something a sociopath would say, so I support this arrest.
4. Really, the haircut.
5. If you believe that dinosaurs and Jesus lived at the same time, well, it's not a stretch to believing that a coupla stray dinosaurs might still be around.
BANG BANG. Have a good weekend!

So much going on here.
A Summerville High School student who says he was arrested and suspended after writing about killing a dinosaur using a gun in a class assignment has hired a lawyer.
Stone said he and his classmates were told in class to write a few sentences about themselves, and a "status" as if it was a Facebook page. Stone said in his "status" he wrote a fictional story that involved the words "gun" and "take care of business."
"I killed my neighbor's pet dinosaur, and, then, in the next status I said I bought the gun to take care of the business," Stone said.

Fun with latitude, also, this is a long walk
So I was idly wondering, as I do, If you left San Francisco and walked in a straight line across the US, where would you end up? FASCINATING RIGHT?
So let's assume that CHP would close the Bay Bridge for us. There would of course be a lot of helicopters and shit to document TK'S WALK ACROSS THE US.
At first it's super boring. Mostly just wilderness. The first town of any size we score a direct hit on is Dodge City, Kansas, which, like San Francisco, is at 37 dgrees, 45 minutes north of the equator and thus is in an exact straight line with SF. HELLO DODGE CITY!!! Bet you didn't know you were San Francisco's Longitude Partner. MWAH!
Onward. We'll pass just north of Harrisburg, Illinois, and straight through Rineyville, Kentucky, where "[t]here is no formal town government; elected county officials oversee roads." SOUNDS WILD. Walking walking walking we will hit Hanover, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond, and then step into the Chesapeake Bay just north of Ingram Cove, not far from Kilmarnock, Virginia, and the Hughlett Point Area Preserve.
I hope we can swim, because we've got a long ways to go before we emerge again onto dry land near Crystal Beach Road in Onancock, Virginia. In fact, here's a picture of almost the exact spot where we'll walk, dripping and covered with seaweed and crap, out of the Chesapeake Bay.
I found this picture attached to a home listing nearby. 3 BRM for $699K! Sounds like a good deal. Little does the future buyer know that he or she is DIRECTLY IN LINE with San Francisco. (The beach is facing the wrong way because it's on a peninsula kind of thing. Take my word for it.)
After crossing the Eastern Shore of Virginia, we shall plunge into the Atlantic near the inelegant-sounding Gargathy Bay. So there's your answer! If you go in a perfectly straight line across America from San Francisco, you walk into the Atlantic not far from Parksley, Virginia. (Parksley's actually at 37 degrees 46 minutes, so it's lined up with the northern half of SF.)
If we're so inclined, and a willing partner is nearby, maybe we can prevail on Reverend Rod, Wedding Officiant, to hitch us up before we begin our long long journey across the Wild Atlantic.
I know what you're asking. WHY IS THIS SO BORING. No, the other thing you're asking. WHERE DO WE POP OUT ON THE OTHER SIDE.
Portugal.
This has been fun! Let's do it again soon.

Consumer Reports' Worst Fast Food Restaurants: Yes, mostly terrible
I see the busybodies at Consumer Reports are back on the job telling us what fast food is OK and what isn't. Leaving aside The Fast Food Golden Rule - A N Y F A S T F O O D I S G R E A T I F Y O U ' R E H U N G O V E R E N O U G H - let's see how they did!
According to this article in "The Week," Consumer Reports surveyed 32,000 non-hungover people and asked them to rank "food quality and freshness, value, politeness, speed of service, and cleanliness of the dining area." I see your problem right there, since you should be ranking Fat and Carb Content, Whether You Can Fill Your Own Soda, Likelihood There Is a Hobo Sleeping in the Next Booth, How Big Are the Fries, and Is This a Wendys. But anyway, here are the worst, from not-quite-the-worst to Basically Inedible. Drum roll please, for 11 to 7:
Yeah, Panda Express is totally gross. Exhibit #1:
Sorry, I hope you didn't just eat. Apart from ghastly combinations like this, most of their food is unrecognizable glop slopped on top of rice or spaghetti noodles. But if you're not changing planes, when are you ever going to have to eat at a Panda Express? If you subject yourself to that, it's your own fucking fault.
Taco Bell is what it is. If you want La Cumbre, go to La Cumbre. If you want a chicken-type product in a tortilla for a dollar, go to the Bell.
I haven't eaten Little Caesars in maybe 25 years so I can't comment.
Domino's is horrible. Good job Consumer Reports. The only time you can ever reasonably eat Domino's is if you're in a hotel in Sioux Falls and nothing else is open or in some kind of terrorist-type scenario where a madman is going to blow up a puppy camp if you don't eat it.
I could have a Pizza Hut once in a while, just for their weird spongy crust. I've never fucked with any of the shit they started doing to their crust like stuffing all that crap in it.
BUT WAIT IT GETS WORSE:
I have no idea what "CiCi's Pizza" is but usually nothing that comes from Texas is any good for anyone.
Burger King is OK. Hey, do you have a Burger King vs. McDonald's preference? Is it normal to have such a preference? Is that something you should discuss with your doctor, like Abilify?
I have McDonald's like once or twice a year and I never regret it any more. I like those flat cheeseburgers. Did you ever see "Super Size Me" where that guy ate nothing but McDonald's for a month or whatever? I saw it and it made me want McDonald's SO BAD that we left the movie theater after it and went straight to a McDonald's.
I never had Church's Chicken in my life.
And finally SBARRO. Yes, Sbarro is terrible. I have no further comment on the issue.

Checking out at Walgreens is now an unending Kafkaesque nightmare
It used to be so easy to buy something at Walgreens! You exchanged cash for your dry goods and went on your way, back to your telegraph shoppe to have a tincture and a linotype. NO MORE.
Walgreens now is equipped with devices programmed by Top Researchers designed to create a state of anger and longing that will prompt you to buy more Wal-profen or Wal-diazepene next time you're in Walgreens. Devious, but effective. These Torture Boxes look like this:
Checking out at Walgreens is now a 22-step process that reminds me of getting a home loan but is less fun. I recently traveled to my Regular Walgreens on Van Ness (hi guys!) and to spend $7 on some chocolate covered raisins and beef jerky. In order to leave said Walgreens with said items, here's what you have to do:
1. Swipe your Walgreens card YEAH RIGHT like you carry it around with you. I don't know if I ever had one. Enter your phone number instead. You want savings, don't you?
2. This is my fave: HOW WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR RECEIPT? With FOUR FUCKING AVAILABLE OPTIONS. I've never stuck around to read them all but I assume besides "printed receipt" and "email receipt" the other 2 are "BEAM IT TELEPATHICALLY INTO MY ASSISTANT'S BRAIN" and "written in the stars."
3. Would you like to donate to Juvenile Something Something Something? This is now the third step and we are nowhere near getting chocolate covered raisins into our face hole.
4. Would you like cash back today?
OMG WALGREENS STOP. This reminds me of an unfunny anecdote. When paying by debit first appeared back in the early 90's I was new to the concept and gave it a shot at, of all places, the Carl's Jr in Mountain View. So I slid my card through and all and the lady behind the counter whose first language was not English said "KAZBAK!!!" And I was like "I'm sorry?" And she said "KAZBAK!!!!" And I figured out she was saying "Cash back?" Oh.
No, I don't want kazbak. I'm at a Walgreens with 20 angry office people behind me. Let's not start banking together, Walgreens.
5. OK SLIDE YOUR CARD!!!!
Now we're getting somewhere.
6. ENTER PIN!!!
I'm on this.
7. Would you like cash back today?
OH MY FUCKING GOD WALGREENS I THOUGHT WE SETTLED THIS
Hand to God this happened today. This Walgreens credit card terminal has as its LIFE MISSION to make sure EVERYONE who might want cash has ample opportunity to get it.
I finally got my stuff. Walgreens, stop it.

It's been a strange few days
Sunday night we had some friends over for dinner and Jessica was holding our dog and noticed that his lymph nodes were swollen. He'd been acting lethargic too, and it was worrying enough that I took him to the VCA Animal ER on Monday, Memorial Day.
ASIDE: If you ever need emergency care for your pet, go to VCA at 18th and Alabama. They were absolutely great.
The vet felt around and said it was lymphoma. I wasn't really processing it and was like, "What's lymphoma?" Lymphoma turns out to be cancer and it's incurable and basically now my dog is going to die. We're working on treatment options with our regular vet but it doesn't look great.
So that was Monday! On Tuesday, we found out that my Dad's cancer, which we thought had mostly gone away, had metastasized and is now all over and it's pretty bad and my sister and I are flying to be with him on Friday.
My Dog and My Dad Have Cancer! It's a country song. Except it's real.
I'm not putting all this out there in a shameless ploy to get your sympathy, but more by way of explanation about why I probably won't be blogging for a while, or if I do, it's probably going to be pretty depressing.
I'm gonna need some whiskey
Cause I feel pretty blue
My Daddy got the cancer
And now my dog does too
I guess I'll work on the lyrics some more.
Oh, one funny story at least has come out of this so far. Last week my Dad was doing some testing to check for brain cancer I guess and our half-sister sent my sister a text and she looked at her phone and it said "Dad has passed" and then she clicked on it and the rest of it said "his cognitive testing with flying colors!" And the moral of the story is BE VERY CAREFUL HOW YOU PHRASE YOUR TEXT MESSAGES.

Red lanes of the world, unite!
Muni Forward! RT @MrCleanSF: More red lanes coming to make traffic safer & quicker. pic.twitter.com/cS1pouRDay
— Ed Reiskin (@EdReiskin) May 7, 2014
Ed, you lovable doofus. "Muni forward!" That sounds like either the lamest office party chant or a leftover Cold War-era Soviet Young Pioneers slogan.ANYWAY, here's the idea. These red lanes are supposed to be for buses (and taxis I think) only, thereby making buses go faster because they have their own special lane and don't have to sit behind cars while cars sit still at stop signs because the drivers are reading text messages or looking at Twitter on their cell phones. I don't do that and I would never do that.
The way they work is that sensors inside the red paint can detect when a normal passenger car is driving in the restricted lane and the sensors activate a series of embedded electrical generators, which send a powerful shock up through the street, leaving the driver of the car in intense, excruciating pain.
j/k, that doesn't happen. The way they work is they rely on the Inherent Goodness of Humanity to keep people from driving their cars in the red lanes.
THERE'S ONLY ONE CATCH: There is no Inherent Goodness in Humanity. People drive in the red lanes all the time! WHEEEEEEEE LOOK AT ME IDGAF!!!!
And that just happened to be randomly captured by the Google Street View car. If you ever go to the Safeway on Church & Market, you know what I'm talking about.
What's the solution? Wait for the Sun to swell and engulf the Earth as it dies in 2.8 billion years. Pending that, a little enforcement! Not SFPD's strongest suit, but it's so crazy it just might work.
Muni forward, comrades!
